Pool Draining & Acid Wash in Oklahoma City

When the water is past saving with chemicals, or the plaster is stained and scaled, a planned drain and clean resets the pool. We decide whether it needs a drain-and-clean, a chlorine wash or an acid wash, handle the water legally, and refill and rebalance so it's ready to swim.

When an OKC pool actually needs draining

Draining is a last resort, not routine maintenance. It usually makes sense in these situations:

  • Hard-water build-up. Oklahoma City draws from Hefner, Overholser and Draper, and every summer top-off adds calcium that evaporation leaves behind. After a few seasons, calcium hardness can climb high enough to scale the tile line, the surface and the salt cell, even with pH in range.
  • Dissolved solids or stabilizer too high. Pools dosed with stabilized chlorine all summer can carry so much cyanuric acid that chlorine stops working well. There's no chemical that removes it. Fresh water is the fix, through a partial or full drain.
  • Green to black. A pool that sat through a storm season or a vacant summer, with sludge on the floor and a smell, can sometimes be recovered chemically. Sometimes draining is faster and cheaper. Green pool recovery covers the chemical route, and we'll tell you honestly which one fits.
  • Stained or rough plaster. Leaf tannins, metal stains and years of scale leave a surface that brushing can't fix.
  • Before a replaster or repair. A resurface, a tile job or a crack repair needs an empty, clean shell.

Drain and clean vs. chlorine wash vs. acid wash

Drain and clean is the lightest option. The pool is pumped down, debris and sludge are cleared, the surface is pressure-rinsed and brushed, and the pool is refilled with fresh water. It fits when the water is the problem and the plaster is fine.

Chlorine wash applies strong chlorine to an empty plaster surface to lift organic stains from leaves, algae and dirt. It's gentler than acid and removes no surface material.

Acid wash uses diluted muriatic acid to strip a thin layer of plaster, taking scale and deep stains with it. It works well, but each wash thins the finish, so it's for pools that need it, not a yearly treatment. Pebble finishes get a lighter version. Fiberglass and vinyl never get acid washed.

Draining a pool in central Oklahoma: what to plan for

Timing. Spring and fall are the best windows. In July and August, sun on bare plaster can dry and crack it within hours, and in a hard freeze an empty pool and its lines are exposed. Late March through May and late September through October give mild temperatures and time to refill before swim season or winter.

Wet ground and hydrostatic pressure. Central Oklahoma's red clay holds water after heavy rain, and groundwater pushes up on an empty shell from below. A concrete pool drained after a wet week can crack or lift. We check recent rainfall, confirm the hydrostatic relief valve where the pool has one, and wait out a wet spell rather than risk the shell.

Red dirt. Wind-blown red dirt stains light plaster, and an empty pool on a windy afternoon collects a fresh layer, so we keep the wash and refill moving.

The water. We let chlorine drop or neutralize it before discharge, run the hose to an approved spot, and pump slowly enough not to flood a neighbor's yard. Your city sets the rules, so we confirm them before starting.

After the refill

Fresh fill water starts low on stabilizer and needs its pH, alkalinity and calcium set from scratch. We balance it, clean the filter of the plaster dust and debris that a wash releases, and check that the pump primes and the equipment restarts cleanly. Many pools then move onto weekly service, or the refill becomes part of a summer pool refresh.

Pool draining and acid wash FAQ

How often should a pool be drained in Oklahoma City?

Most plaster and pebble pools in the metro go three to five years or more between full drains. What sets the schedule is the water, not the calendar: calcium, dissolved solids and stabilizer build up a little with every summer of top-offs and evaporation. When testing shows they've climbed past what chemicals and a partial drain can correct, it's time. An annual drain is almost never needed.

Can you drain a fiberglass or vinyl pool?

Usually not all the way. A fiberglass shell can shift or lift when the water that holds it down is gone and the ground around it is wet, and an exposed vinyl liner can shrink, wrinkle or tear and may not refit. For these pools we use partial drains and refills, and if a full drain is truly needed, we plan it around dry weather and the manufacturer's guidance first.

How long does an acid wash take?

The wash itself is usually a single day on a typical residential pool. The whole job takes longer: draining often runs most of a day with a submersible pump, then the wash and neutralizing rinse, then a refill from a garden hose that can take one to three days depending on pool size and water pressure. Plan on the pool being out of use for roughly three to five days.

Where does the pool water go when you drain it?

It depends on where you live in the metro. Storm drains and street gutters carry water untreated to creeks and the river, so chlorinated or salty pool water generally shouldn't go there. The usual options are a sanitary sewer cleanout on the property or spreading dechlorinated water slowly across your own lawn. Rules differ between Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman, Moore and Yukon, so check with your city before a drain. We plan the discharge before the pump goes in.
